Choosing a School for First-Timers
First-time Moms, it's May! By now, you have probably decided which school your little ones will attend to this coming school year, right? If your answer is yes, great job! If your answer is no, it's not too late. Don't panic. Let me share what I've learned when it was my first time to choose a school. Here are the qualifications I considered:
I know this is a no brainer but there are some preschools who actually operate without a permit and parents wouldn't know unless they investigate. My daughter started schooling at the age of 3. My husband thought it's too early for her but from what I know, it's actually the right age following DepEd's Regulation . I've found out about this from the only school who took time to explain this regulation to me when I inquired. Out of 7 schools, only 1 explained this. They made a good first impression! I knew then that they are not new on this business and they know what they are doing.
I wanted to make sure my daughter's school is not only clean but with enough ventilation for sunlight and fresh air. Am I too picky? Yes, because my daughter had Kawasaki Disease when she was 3. This is why I wanted a school which has a healthy environment. I also looked for a school that has an outdoor playground that is not covered so that she can literally play under the sun. The school I chose has huge windows where fresh air from their open field of trees and plants comes in. They have an outdoor and indoor playground too. They even have a small farm where there are animals like chickens and goats. They even grow vegetables there. Plus, it's a new campus! New as in my daughter is a pioneer of this school campus.
Waking up children early morning is not easy. So, the closer the school is to your home, the better! We wouldn't want to wake up our kids at 5am just to be on time for school, right?
4. School Bus
It's a good feeling to be able to bring your kids to school but when you work, a school service is a must! It's hassle free. However, make sure to ask the school how many students are there per route or how many school bus do they actually have. This is to make sure that your child wouldn't wait for an hour or so to get home.
5. Student Teacher Ratio
We know our little ones are not that easy to handle all the time. What more when they are all together in one room? Chaos. This is why some preschools have strict 10:2 (10 students with 1 adviser and 1 assistant). Some has 20:3. I'll go with 10:2 because it's ideal. Believe me, this really helps in the child's progress. I've proven it with my daughter when she had 13 versus 18 classmates.
Of course, this is one thing to consider. This ranges from Php 20,000 - 150,000. It will depend on the location and the inclusion. Provincial rate would be less than city rate, as we all know. Those school fees of more than 50,000 usually includes books/notebooks/1 set of uniform while those more than 80,000 has child insurance and snacks.
In Traditional Schools, there is a structured curriculum and tests where topics are presented in different subjects. Progressive Schools on the other hand, present topics across cohesive subjects then students connect their learning to real life and everyday experiences. Consider your little one's personality and learning style when choosing a school. You can also attend sample classes to see which type of school your child would be most comfortable with.
